Several years ago in one of my literature classes, the professor showed us a film, and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was, or anything specific enough about it to be able to run a successful search.
What I do remember:
-It was an East or Southeast Asian film, with English subtitles.
-Throughout the film, it would cut to a narrator/storyteller guy on a stage, with a drum. This was the reason we were shown the film in my class: to highlight the important oral tradition of the country in which the film was set.
-It was a period film (not modern day)
-In the beginning, the prince (I think he was a prince, anyway) of whatever country it was was studying for an important exam.
-As the plot developed, the prince posed as a peasant and went on a journey through the countryside. If I remember correctly, he was looking to find out how loyal his people were… or something to that effect.
-There was a love interest, and a gorgeous love scene in her house in the country.

Could it possibly be the Korean film ‘Chunhyang’ ?http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245837/
… the plot and narrative style sound very familiar.
    Hope this helps!
