We were MADE to watch Threads at school at 11 YEARS OLD as part of a humanties class. We were watching it in 2 parts but I only ever saw the 1st one (up to just after where the bomb has gone off and the little lad is dead with the birds) because it affected me so badly.
I was absolutley terrified had bad nightmares and brought on a panic attacks. I was so badly traumatised my parents let me “skive” the 2nd part and pretend to be ill that day. I was seriously in such a bad way that if anyone mentioned it I would shake!!
It affected me to the extent that everytime that wheely trolley thing with the TV and video came into the class for us to watch something I would nearly be sick and have a panic attack in case we had to watch something similar or worse – of course I never dared admit this as would have got picked on so had to keep it all hidden which made it worse. I would say I felt like this till I left school 5 years later.
Recently one of my friends was discussing school and said how badly this film had affected her as well (they had to watch it is religious studies) and to be honest I had forgotten (or made myself) forget all about it. Just talking about it brought back the panic feelings within me so I decided to re visit it as an adult.
It is a very powerful, gritty film. Hard to watch but with a very important message.
I feel that everyone should watch it at least once BUT as an ADULT not just on the whim of some teacher at school!!!
I wondered if anyone else had experienced this as have since discovered that it was policy in the 1980’s to show it in schools.
Did you see it in school? At What age? How did it effect you? Have you watched it since?

I was born in the 80’s so never saw it in school. I have heard of plenty of people being shown it in school.
It’s a very powerful film and I agree it is very hard to watch and has a important message. I can’t believe such a programme shown to an 11 year old. It’s a dark message at a time when people were frightened of possible nuclear attacks.
I found Threads disturbing and I watched it at 21/22. I felt very uncomfortable about it. I think it would have a affected me very badly if I had been younger.

I’ve never seen it – I was forced to watch “When the wind blows” in school at around that age, which was saddening enough, but just reading the plot of “Threads” is … well it’s very thought-inspiring. It’s an incredibly scary storyline. The effects it had on you were understandable.

I was in my 20’s when it was shown. I found it a grim film, because of the subject matter, but it did not effect me unduly as I was convinced that a nuclear exchange was a very unlikely scenario. Even back then, I thought the biggest threat to our society was terrorism rather than nuclear war.

I remember that, when the bombs went off and that woman peed her pants. it was so funny.
But anyway, yeah we watched it when we were 16 and it didn’t seem too bad then. there was a few bad bits, but nothing we couldn’t cope with. I think 11 is probably a bit too young though, so I can understand why you had problems with it.

I didn’t see it in school, i’m only 16 but when I saw it I was 9 and I was absolutely terrified, it scared me so much it actually made me cry, it’s the bit where the sirens go and everyones in a panic. It’s awful. My dad saw it in school and it scared him too he thought it was a terrible film. He was 11
